Henry Frank Phillips June four, 1889 – April thirteen, 1958 become a U.S. businessman from Portland, Oregon. The Phillips-head crosshead screw and screwdriver are named after him.[1]

The importance of the crosshead screw design lies in its self-centering property, useful on automatic production strains that use powered screwdrivers.[2] Phillips' predominant contribution became in the use of the crosshead idea in advance to the thing where it was followed by using screwmakers and automobile corporations. The credited inventor of the Phillips screw become John P. Thompson.

After failing to interest manufacturers, Thompson offered his self-centering layout to Phillips in 1935.[3] Phillips formed the Phillips Screw enterprise in 1934. After refining the design himself (U.S. Patent #2,046,343, U.S. Patents #2,046,837 to two,046,840) for the yank Screw business enterprise of windfall, Rhode Island, Phillips succeeded in bringing the layout to business manufacturing and promoting its fast adoption as a machine screw wellknown.[4] one of the first customers was widespread vehicles who used the present day layout in 1936 for its Cadillac assembly-strains. through using 1940, eighty five% of U.S. screw manufacturers had a license for the format.[5] due to failing fitness, Phillips retired in 1945. He died in 1958.
